I read this book in spite of the fact that I wasn't a huge fan of Malice in the Highlands. I liked it enough to read the next book, and it didn't hurt that it's set in Cornwall, so I may be biased.
With that: The best thing I can say is I liked it better than the first book. I thought it /5. The atmosphere of Cornwall is very well described with the various weather conditions contributing to the feeling of malice and danger.
The mystery is probably not very difficult for readers to figure out, but that could have been overlooked if there hadn't been several elements to the writing which kept me irritated/5(8). When we were preparing MALICE IN THE HIGHLANDS and MALICE IN CORNWALL for publication, Graham would e-mail us with continual changes; mistakes and ambiguity are not allowed.
He is so enmeshed in his stories that he does not want anything to take the reader out of them, the way a clunky sentence, a typographical error, or an ambiguous speaker might/5(8).

Malice by John Gwynne is the first book in The Faithful and the Fallen series, and it is an epic fantasy that has flown under the radar of a lot of fantasy aficionados. Malice was the first fantasy I ever wrote that starts in the real world, as opposed to starting in a fantastical one and staying there. I was very keen that this book would be pinned to reality as well as fantasy, to keep it grounded.
